[/ QUOTE ] Yeah really
How can u knuckel heads say that Phil is a bad coach when he stays at the ball fields and watches the kids from p-nut through JV.Anytime there is a game u can find him there. He has one 8 state titles and has maney more to come from what i see.I've watched the LPD for maney years and Phil and his vikings have allways been a powerhouse and will be as long as he is at PV.People and their kids in Big Stone love him.I watched a jv scrimage in appy the other night and from what i seen out of the Burke,Lusk,Pippin, and Shortt kids robbins has a bright future ahead of him.PV fans hope to see the Lusk kid back in top notch soon he is a great player on both sides of the ball.So go PV and Phil Robbins and show these whinners what u can do.
good lord...i hope you aren't one of those kids you just mentioned...for a couple reasons
1) that'd mean you're in 8th-9th grade and have no clue about spelling, grammar or sentence structure
2) you had to have seen those other kids get blasted for talking about themselves (or sons, daughters) on here
3) youd have to be pretty starved for attention
Actually, he has only won 7 state titles (don't get me wrong, not too shabby). He wasn't the coach in '82 when they won their first title.
Where did you learn how to spell?
You have watched the lpd for MANEY years, but you still cannot spell worth a $hit.
well i might cant spell but i no that phil is a great coach and a great roll model to the kids of pv.i no he has only won 7 titles but i was takin about this year...Haha
No vthokie22 im not one of those kids or a parent.i.ve been a lpd scout for 26 years.i might not be able to spell or use correct grammar but i no talent when i see it and robbins and his vikings from 8th through 12th has got it.There also other great coaches and teams in the lpd and u never here anyone cracking on them all u ever here about robbins and the vikings to me this is complete jealousey.tom turner was a great coach his shoes are going to be hard to fill if they can be filled and i fill the same about phil so if u no of any one that can do what hes done send them.If not _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ up!!!
The reason folks crack on Phil is that, well, he totally deserves it!! Don't even mention Tom Turner in the same sentence as Phil Robbins!! One man built men the other won some championships! I would rather have a coach that builds character than a high school championship ring any day!!!
Ok I'm greatly disturbed if you have been scouting anything for 26 years and can't do any better than that.
Phil is a legend, no doubt about that. Heck, if you don't think so, just ask him!
I may not 'no' talent but I think most of us 'no' when someone's words don't measure up to what they say.
AMEN ..... makes me want to vomit to even think that someone could actually compare the two... one's an arrogant, poor sportsman, a$$, while the other was a true legend and coach. I think people should refer to Phil as Mr. Robbins... not a coach in my book... knowing the x and o's is only part of the job IMO
Virginia preps regarding Phil Robbins.
this is from two years ago, written by someone from giles county.why; phil and the vikings beat them to death after they talked s__t all year.you people no nothing about phil robbins the man off the football field.you read a comment in the paper or see him on the news and thats it.Its a proven fact people are jealous of success.lpd sports forum motto-you cant beat him blast him on here. lol
OK...I'm in an undisclosed town in New England now, so no one can physically attack me for anything I say.
That said: Robbins is a modern coach. Words like "great" are ignorant in and of themselves. You can just throw them around without defining them. By modern I mean he is a scholar--look at his bunch and rub schemes, or even his classic sit-down route (which is a simplified variant of Coverdale's mesh package--Coverdale coaches Indiana prep football.) I have talked with coaches away from home including out of state, and they know of Robbins, they have learned from him. He is an influence beyond the LPD--ie Wise County.
Let me remind you, I am an old General. When the Friday night lights turn on, I am a rabid Viking hater. (By the way, what happened to scoring 80 on my Gens?) Nonetheless, Robbins is a different animal behind closed doors. He is a PR master. He personally talked to me about coaching, eventually persuading me to follow suite. Several coaches know this.
Many persons back SW dislike Robbins' playing out of state perenials, like Seymour, but that is the trend, look at Hoover High (AL), Byrnes HS (SC), Lakewood Carrol (TX), or De LaSalle (CA). Heck the Cali school flew out to play the Tewxas one.
Ultimately, the only persons who can honestly comment on the quality of any coach are the players he has worked with over the years. I have heard too many players defend Robbins to deny him his status. We can all have our own opinions--mine actually being that winning at all costs is not good coaching--but ultimately we cannot deny his record, which ranks among the top in Virginia prep history.
Why the hell was this crusty old topic brought back to life? Yes I hate robbins and I don't really think he's that good of a coach. Carrot Top could've coached a team to that many state championships if he Had Two NFL running backs and the lineman phil robbins had at that time. But let it die.
This is getting stupid. Before Coach Robbins does anything to draw bad attention to himself and the team people start to rag on him already.
Plus it waas stupid to even bring this topic up when after a year most topics don't even or at least shouldn't see the light of day anymore. People need to quit worrying about the sorry attitude they think he has or had about a game that didn't go in favor of the Vikings. It's getting stupid. If he makes an arse of himself this year then I could care less. But geeze. I don't like him sometimes but the guy's human.
No one seems to mention the quote he gave in the preseason publication about humility, being prepared for every team and not being cocky. Seems to undermine some's notion about Phil's lack of class/humility/whatever.
But alas, this is the defintion of a bias. Having a preconcieved notion or belief and then simply looking for what justifies that belief, yet ignoring what could possibly discredit it.
Ox is also correct; to get to know one's character takes more than just reading snipets of an interview; only those who have dealt personally with Phil for an extended period of time have a legitimate claim to know his personality. Writers cant put ever word in an article...one could be extremely gracious and then make one negative remark and that would be the one that got published.
Finally, as for the Giles game. We tried to run out the clock on them. We ran the ball on 1st, 2nd and 3rd down out of 3 wides. What did they do? Load the box with 9 guys (leaving one WR uncovered) and proceeded to call timeouts after every play. All they had to do was let the clock run. To do that, and then not have enough wherewithal to cover the slot receiver practically daring us to throw it to him, I really have no sympathy for that. We gave them the opportunity to allow the game to end and they made it apparent that they desired to continue play. So on fourth down, we threw it to the UNCOVERED, UNGUARDED receiver...AFTER we tried to run out the clock, which they refused to allow.
And I have heard that that play wasn't even really intended to be a touchdown. Well I should say expected.
And then the Giles people on VA preps have done nothing but whine when one even so much mentions Coach Robbins. I believe he even said in the review of that game in the paper that he didn't like that it had to happen. Kindly correct me if I am wrong.
Sometimes I don't like Phil Robbins and sometimes I do. He's a human being. Every human coach, band director, or any other authoritative figure is gonna be a jerk at least a few times. I was section leader for the PV trumpets last year and assistant section leader my junior year. It's happened to me a couple of times.
But my point really is, I'm sure a lot of coaches have gotten disgruntled. May not have shown it over the newspaper.
When he said that about Haysi against Giles, that could have been interpretted many different ways. "Good enough to lose to Giles by 2 or 3 touchdowns". Maybe he could have meant that Giles is really good and that no team around here could beat them and maybe Haysi may be able to keep the score within that margin. I don't know. Because I don't have his brain so I really know didley squat about his intentions. Neither does anyone else. But whatever he meant by that comment, he was asked. He spoke his mind. It was a year ago so it's time to move on and get over it.
I have seen a side of Phil Robbins that many do not see and he does care about the kids just like Tom did at Appalachia. Both are deserving of their awards over they years. Reason a lot of people do not like Phil or Tom is because they are winners.
Broady,
How can you say that Phil is a loser? National high school hall of fame, multiple state championships, envy of the region...man, you must have been snorting coal truck fumes! No doubt, Phil has his personality snaffus, but no one can question his coaching ability. I'm sick of hearing people say, "If I had the Jones boys, I could win too." Bull. Show me a coach at any level that won consistently without consistent talent - at any level from pros to high school. All winnings teams have a combination of of good coaches and good talent - Lombardi, Landry, Holtz, etc. It takes both. On the flip side, I've seen teams with much talent bu couldn't win due to inadequate coaching.
After the Seymour game last night: Phil will have several changes in place before the Breathitt game. Breathitt may win, but Phil is smart enough to know when to change. He changed his offensive line last year after the loss to Burton; I'd say he'll make changes this year cause he's a good coach with the desire to win. See you n H'burg in December.
